Jesus told His disciples immediately before He went to the cross, that He had a choice. He could have called 12 armies of angels to come and rescue Him, if He desired. (Matthew 26:53 & 54). But, He said, the scriptures had to be fulfilled. For thousands of years, the prophets had prophesied that the Messiah would be tortured and killed, and that He would take our sins and sicknesses by His sacrifice. Isaiah 53 foretells this explicitly. Jesus knew who He was and what His assignment was. He also knew that by going to the cross, he would bring many sons and daughters to His Father. He chose to do the will of the Father no matter what the cost. Next to the cross, what is a few hours of prayer, a little fasting, or turning the other cheek?
