Jesus gave us communion, which is a very powerful act of remembering what He did for us on the cross. The Bread is symbolic of His body, being pierced and beaten for us. The wine is symbolic of Jesus’ Blood which was shed not only on the cross, but began when he was struck repeatedly when questioned by Herod, when the crown of thorns was pushed into His head, and when He was beaten before He ever got to the cross. What is interesting is that the bread and the wine show up long before the time of Jesus when we first see the mystery man, Melchizedek, the king of Salem, who was the priest of the Most High God. Melchizedek is described as: “bringing forth bread and wine,” before he blesses Abram after his winning a great battle (Genesis 14:18, KJV). Types and shadows of New Testament doctrines are cleverly hidden in the Old Testament for us to seek out! This is God’s infinite wisdom, greatness, and “hidden treasures” for us to find in His Word!
