The book of Luke has two similar statements, one about John the Baptist and one about Jesus. The birth of Jesus was surrounded by many supernatural occurrences, and these continued in the life of Jesus, especially during his ministry years, which are well documented by the gospels. The first statement that is made after John the Baptist had been born, and his father, Zechariah’s mouth was opened so that he could speak again, and who had supernaturally been filled with the Holy Spirit in order to prophesy over his son John: “And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel” (Luke 1:80). The second scripture is found in Luke 2:40 when Mary and Joseph had moved to Nazareth when Jesus was young. It states: “And the child grew, and waxed strong in the spirit, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.” The Word doesn’t state that the young boys grew strong physically or mentally, but that they grew strong spiritually. This is mandatory for the day in which we live. We must wax strong in spirit, letting our spirits rule us, not our minds or bodies!
